Getting into the Holiday Spirit

Now that December is here, it’s time to start feeling the holiday spirit. I suppose everyone has a different mood during the holidays, depending on the type of person. They can fall into 3 categories in varying degrees. There are people who:

  1. don’t like the holidays at all and wish the season would be over.
  2. barely think of the holiday and are just glad to have a few days off at the end of the year.
  3. absolutely love the holidays and for them it’s the best time of the year.

For me, I’m the last type of person: I love the holiday season! This year, the mood is stronger than ever. If you’re like me who loves the holiday season, here are a few things you can do to get into the spirit:

  • Decorate your house with a tree, wreath, lights and all sorts of things. I’d recommend putting up your tree in the 1st or 2nd week of December. That way, you have an entire month to enjoy the decorations before you can take them down in January.
  • Watch holiday movies. I personally watch Home Alone 1 and 2 during this time of year. You could have your own favourites that you traditionally watch once a year such as It’s a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Story and National Lampoon’s Holiday Vacation. Even Die Hard is technically a holiday movie. You can also read some stories such as Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens or How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss.
  • Spend more time with family and friends. Nothing says the holidays more than sharing some merry and warm times with family and friends. It’s a time to relax and reminisce about the entire year with your whole family. I find that it’s a time when I really think about how thankful I am for my family.
  • Get crafty and creative! You could make home-made decorations with your kids or create your own signature hot cocoa recipe, For me, it's designing/drawing things like making a banner at the beginning of this blog post, or creating a collaborative project with my colleagues here at REM (Coming soon. We're excited about this one!).

What about you? What do you do to get into the spirit? Do you have yearly, holiday traditions that you do yourself or with your family and friends?
