REM Web Solutions is pleased to present you with the 22nd issue of WebWiz@rdry, our quarterly online newsletter. The purpose of WebWiz@rdry is to help our subscribers maximize the effectiveness of their website, thus providing them with expert advice and keeping them current on trends in the web world. WebWiz@rdry also includes a client profile, which we feel is a great way to introduce some of the fantastic clients that we work with to all of our subscribers.
Spam. We all detest it. Unfortunately it has become a regular part of our lives whether you receive it to your personal inbox, or your business account.
Fortunately, there are services/systems in place to minimize the chances of you receiving spam directly to your inboxes. By now, most email hosting companies have a Spam Security Service in place to minimize or even eliminate spam from coming directly to your inbox. Instead, the spam or suspected spam is "trapped" in a quarantine. You are then able to log in to the message centre to check for "false positives"-- email that is actually not spam, but contains something in the message that could be considered spam.
Our Spam Filtering System has detected and blocked a vast majority of spam attacks, and continues to release protections to stop the new mutations. Their capture rate is over 99%; however, the attack volumes are so large (in the hundreds of millions of messages) that a 1% passthrough rate means that a few messages may end up in your inbox.
The latest form of spam is bogus Microsoft downloaders and other messages that contain links to download malware. Spammers have created false Microsoft Outlook notifications and Amazon/World Pay confirmations, and added links that prompt users to download a fake update or invoice.
For best security practices, if you see any suspect security notifications or strange messages either in your inbox or in quarantine:
- Do not deliver these messages from your quarantine center to your inbox
- Delete these messages from your inbox
- Do not click on any links in the messages and do not open any attachments
- Visit the vendor/company's web site directly if you need to access any of the services listed in the suspect email
