Being a web design and development company, our jobs don't really require us to work from a typical office building, so you might think "hmm, I bet all of the employees at REM work from their "home" office."
Well that is only half true! We have 2 satellite offices in other parts of Ontario, plus our main office here in Waterloo. The majority of us work at the main location-- our cozy, home-like office (it is an old house that was turned into an office) on the corner of King and Union.
But it's not so much the type of building that we are located in as why are we located in the city that we are.
Simply put, Waterloo is where the action is.
Some of the largest employers in the province are in Waterloo. (RIM, Manulife, University of Waterloo, Sunlife, Open Text, Wilfrid Laurier University) Many other high-tech companies (Google, McAfee, Oracle), with headquarters elsewhere, have opened offices in Waterloo to take advantage of the high
concentration of tech employees in Waterloo Region.
Waterloo is also a hot bed for small business start-ups. We consistently have people calling us saying that they have just started a business (and of course, need a web site!). There are many ways for small businesses to connect and network in a city such as Waterloo. Communitech and Canada's Technology Triangle are just two organizations that assist tech companies by connecting them to business networks and information that will help them grow and succeed. As a member of Communitech, we find there is great value in being a part of such organizations.
For these reasons, we believe that Waterloo is a great place for tech businesses to take root.
