AODA Customer Service Standard is in full effect for all companies and organizations as of January 1, 2012. This standard has been put in place so organizations can properly handle the needs for people with disabilities.
In order to fully prepare yourself there are some good resources provided by the Ontario Government located at http://www.mcss.gov.on.ca/en/mcss/programs/accessibility/index.aspx.
There have been a lot of questions in the last few months about how this applies to your website. At this point, the only websites that need to adhere to WCAG 2.0 guidelines are official government websites. i.e. that have gov.on.ca in the domain name.
The timeline for other organizations to implement these guidelines has not been set and it is likely that the Ontario government will adjust these guidelines once they find out the impact they have on their own websites.
At this point, 1% of the websites on the internet are fully WCAG 2.0 compliant.
We will continue to update our readers and clients about the impact and requirements this will have once it is established by the Ontario government.
