Backlinks are an effective way to increase your rankings across search engines however there is a right way and wrong way of adding them.
Backlinks are links from other websites that link to your website.
Backlinks are most beneficial when they come from multiple, related sources, when they come from reputable websites and when they are combined with keywords.
I am going to use the service of a wedding photographer for my examples below.
Backlinking From Multiple, Industry Related Websites
Your backlinks would be more effective if they came from other companies in your field - not your competition - but others in your industry. Building relationships with these vendors can prove to be rewarding not only for the purpose of creating backlinks but perhaps for referrals as well.
Online directories would be an avenue to consider too.

The process of adding backlinks from reputable or well-known websites may prove to be difficult or perhaps even incur a cost but if you have the opportunity to add a backlink to your site from a website that already has really great internet presence, that would be wonderful.
Backlinks Using Key Words
